Nice essay!

When considering the case for "alphabetic exceptionalism," I urge you to pay special attention to the case of early modern Japan, notable for attaining high popular literacy rates with a non-phonetic writing system. Richard Rubinger and Peter Kornicki have written the essential scholarship on this topic (from very different angles).
